Making men happy

30 Aug

This week I arrived at Sunday evening on a very happy note. Over the weekend I’d managed to catch up with family and friends, get some quality surveying done, read the fabulous guest-post my friend has written for me (more on this below) and get most of my miscellaneous chores crossed off the list. For me, feeling productive and connecting with the people in my life makes me happy.

In our complicated society, happiness seems to be a bit of a slippery dream, or so we’re led to believe. Some women change their appearance, weight, diet, pursuits and lifestyle in an attempt to either attract men or make the men they’re with happy, often at the expense of their own happiness. And yet, according to research conducted by The New Science of Happiness, it really is the simpler things in life which bring the greatest joy.

The research identified the top eleven things which make men happy:Houndly happiness

  1. Listening to music
  2. Talking to friends/family
  3. Helping others
  4. Praying/meditating
  5. Taking a bath/shower
  6. Playing with a pet
  7. Exercising/working out
  8. Going out with friends
  9. Eating
  10.  Having sex
  11.  Taking a drive in the car.

Surprisingly, there’s no mention of money and a lot of the things on the list are either free or could be done at a low-cost.

I found this list reassuring. It made me realise men and women really aren’t that different when it comes to happiness. We all just want to relax and spend time with the people we care about. Simple as that. Knowing this makes me feel more comfortable approaching guys I don’t know because, at the end of the day, connecting with the people around us and helping them makes us happy. I suppose the fact that very few guys decline answering my survey is testament to this.

A very big thank you to men’s health expert Greg Millan for sharing this information with me.

This week, I’m lucky enough to have my first guest-post. Stay tuned for a look at one Sydney man’s experience dating on both sides of the globe.

And as a final word, I’d like to plug the good men of Truscotts for their auto-advice. If you’re looking for honest auto-services, head over Truscotts and ask for Morris. As a woman, I’ve had a number of mechanics try to swindle me in the past. Unfortunately for them, my dad’s a mechanical engineer, so they’ve been caught out. But the guys at Truscotts were so helpful in sorting out the roof of my car, which had been sat on by some large-arsed thugs and completely dented, that I drove away (de-dented!) with a renewed sense of the world being filled with good people.
